With the advent of 4G and the use of softphones, the question of how much data a VoIP call uses comes up regularly. The data usage depends on the codec used and the duration of the call. The use of a secure connection (SRTP) can also influence data consumption. To give you an indication, below are the statistics for a 5-minute call using the PCMA, G729, and G722 codecs respectively.
- PCMA: 600 kB per minute
- G722: 600 kB per minute
- G729: 180 kB per minute
